Premium artisan bakery New Found Joy, which specializes in gluten-free treats, has secured space on grocery retailer Tesco shelves in selected stores across North Ireland. “Having run a successful coffee shop business for years, making the move into manufacturing was daunting but exciting at the same time as we were hugely encouraged by customer feedback,” said owner Carol Little who founded New Found Joy in 2014.

PSI rolls out flurry of new products | 4-Traders 10-29-16
Pharmaceutical Specialties Inc. (PSI), the maker of chemical-free Vanicream skin lotion, is expanding its product range. A new medicated cleansing bar dubbed Z-Bar is ready to launch. Z-Bar and PSI’s other products are specially formulated for people with sensitive skin. Products are void of chemicals, dyes, formaldehyde, lanolin, gluten and fragrances. An antiperspirant/deodorant is in the pipeline as well. PSI products are sold through Target, Walgreens, Rite Aid and other US retailers.

Pinnacle Foods Reports 3rd Quarter Fiscal 2016 Results | Company press release 10-27-16
Pinnacle Foods posted sales of $758.8 million in the third quarter, reflecting a 19.3% increase compared with the same year-ago period. The increase is, in large part, due to contributions from Boulder Brands. The company reported that Boulder Brands, which it acquired in January 2016, recorded sales of $121 million in Q3.

Tesco has launched a selection box suitable for vegans. The ‘Free From Selection Box’ contains one chocolate bar, one choc ‘n’ crispie bar, one white chocolate bar, one packet of chocolate buttons, and one packet of white chocolate buttons – all of which are free from gluten, wheat and milk. A larger Gluten & Dairy Free Selection Box is available for £19.99.

The Gluten Management Association (GMA) has been launched in New Zealand for the purpose of raising the awareness of gluten-free foods. GMA is a not-for-profit body dedicated to supporting makers, servers and sellers of gluten-free food for people with gluten related disorders including celiac disease. Certification programs are provided for food outlets interested in capturing the market for the growing number of customers who do not want to buy food containing gluten.

Stores need to stock ‘free from’ ranges to boost sales and drive customer loyalty, say retailers including a shop owner whose gluten-free food to go brings in nearly £4,000 weekly turnover. Abdul Arain, of Al Amin Stores in Cambridge, has offered gluten-free and vegan friendly food to go made in-store for 15 years. “We’ve become a destination. We have a lot of people come in to us because they know other shops won’t have the same kind of choice,” said Mr Arain. “There is a huge opportunity there.”

Test improves detection of proteins in starch; aids in ‘gluten-free’ labeling | American Chemical Society press release via EurekAlert 10-12-16
Scientists have developed a more reliable way for manufacturers to detect gluten in purified wheat starch, a common ingredient in foods labeled gluten-free. Current testing for gluten in foods involves running an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, or ELISA. Although the method determines gliadin levels accurately, its measurements of glutenins are less reliable. Now researchers have combined gel-permeation high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection to develop a sensitive technique that can detect both gliadins and glutenins in purified wheat starch.
