Pinnacle Foods Axes Boulder Brands UK Subsidiary | Food Ingredients First 11-30-16
Pinnacle Foods has axed its UK free-from subsidiary Boulder Brands, saying that its focus is on its North American food business. Pinnacle Foods acquired Boulder Brands, whose brands include Udi’s gluten-free pizzas and Evol natural frozen meals, at the end of last year. It acquired the business as it looked to attract younger consumers with gluten-free and organic foods.

Simon Howie Butchers has secured new supply deals with Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Morrisons and Asda for its new gluten free haggis. The Perthshire-based company said the gluten free haggis will also be available to food service customers – pubs, hotels and restaurants – from December.

Following on a single location in Boulder, Colo., gluten-free restaurant Blooming Beets Kitchen is opening a second location on December 1 at Ray Road and 56th Street in Chandler, Ariz. The entire menu is gluten-free, catering to those who have dietary restrictions or prefer to avoid gluten. The menu also follows the Paleo diet, which in general does not include grains or processed sugars, and features food that is dense in nutrients.

In what appears to be an unprecedented move on college campuses, the University of Connecticut has indicated that all residential dining halls and its Union Street Market will switch to using only a gluten-free, vegan pizza crust. Robert Landolphi, the culinary operations manager for UConn Dining Services said the decision was made to use the gluten-free crust in all residential dining halls following a tasting with non-gluten-free students. “They all liked it a lot.”

Vege Chip Company set to export to China after Walmart deal | Gold Coast Bulletin 11-10-16
Australian snack food producer The Vege Chip Company is set to export its products to China, marking the firm’s first foray into an overseas market. It produces gluten-free products including Ajitas Vege Chips and Deli Crisps Original, which it supplies to Woolworths and Coles in Australia. The company recently signed a deal with Walmart in China to supply 300 stores there. Vege Chip Company managing director Rob Crisfield said, “The product demand is growing rapidly. Every year we see 20 to 30 per cent growth. It defies gravity.”

The Arizona-based Grabbagreen fast casual restaurant chain specializing in gluten-free foods is expanding into the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. The first Dallas location opens on November 30 at 3417 Gaston Ave. Another 20 DFW franchised locations are in the works. Grabbagreen promotes an “Eat Clean, Grabbagreen” philosophy and is said to be the first fast food concept of its kind serving mostly organic food items, antibiotic and hormone-free beef, poultry, whole food, fresh juice and smoothies in the country.

The Good Scone offers gluten-free vanilla and chocolate cake mixes along with a gluten-free all-purpose flour. The company was created by Tricia Fages of Point Loma, CA. Fagas noted, “We do not have a storefront. We have a certified-organic, gluten- and dairy-free manufacturer in Vista.” The Good Scone’s products are also sold nationwide at select grocery outlets as well as over its website and Amazon.

US gluten-free retail sales rose 11% in 2015; will slow to +6% in 2016, says Packaged Facts | Food Navigator 11-07-16
US retail sales of gluten-free products rose 11% in 2015 and are predicted to rise a more modest 6% to $1.66bn in 2016, according to a new report from Packaged Facts, which predicts that as the market matures, growth rates are “expected to slow considerably.”

More than a quarter of shoppers buy free-from products despite warnings they could be unhealthy | The Telegraph 11-06-16
According to a poll of 2,035 consumers conducted by Harris Interactive for The Grocer, a UK publication, 27% of consumers regularly bought lactose, dairy, gluten or grain-free products, up from 19% a year ago. But only 14% of those consumers said they had a condition – such as celiac disease – which necessitates a strict diet. The most cited reason for buying the items was “for my general health.”

Lidl launches own-label free-from, organic range in Italy | Just Food 11-04-16
Lidl has introduced its own store brand of free-from and organic products in Italy. The range will include more than 60 products including frozen, fresh and dry goods, as well as wine and drinks. The German retailer said the new lines were developed to cater to customer needs due to increased food allergies as well as customers’ interest in maintaining a healthier and more eco-friendly diet. Gluten-free products will carry the logo of the Italian Coeliac Association (AIC).
